It’s all Connected

Whole body inflammation, also known as systemic inflammation (SI), refers to a state where
inflammation occurs throughout the body rather than being localized to a specific area. It can be
caused by various factors, including infections, autoimmune disorders, chronic diseases, and
lifestyle factors. It can CAUSE Insulin Resistance (Type II Diabetes), Obesity, Metabolic
Syndrome, Heart Disease, Gastrointestinal issues such as Leaky Gut and more. This type of
inflammation involves the release of pro-inflammatory molecules and immune responses that
affect multiple organ systems.

Horses suffer from Systemic Inflammation as well as do humans.

It’s All Connected: Bodywide Inflammation in Horses
Equine researchers have begun studying the concept of whole-body inflammation because of its
links to a variety of health problems, including “leaky gut syndrome”; musculoskeletal injury risk;
and equine metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and laminitis. …The ways we feed and
keep our horses have a profound effect on their overall health. Many triggers lead to bodywide
inflammation, with stress, obesity, high-starch and -sugar diets, intense exercise, and NSAIDs
leading the charge. Good horse-keeping and nutritional practices are instrumental in preventing
many problems that could ultimately result in bodywide inflammation. Looking at the body
holistically can give us a new perspective on management strategies.(1)

Whole Horse Inflammatory Disease (WHID) OR (SI) is the number one killer of horses in the
world today. Profit motivated science has disguised it from horse owners, putting forth bogus
diseases in its name. Laminitis is just one example. Laminitis is not a disease; it is a symptom of
WHID. (2)

Some common symptoms of systemic inflammation may include fatigue, joint pain, fever, and
overall discomfort. In horses, it can manifest in behavioral issues and overall personality
changes.

Chronic, systemic inflammation is a serious health concern that can be made worse — or better
— with diet.

“You are what you eat.”

This is a phrase I grew up with. I poo-poo’d it when I was a child. As I grew older I realized just
how poignant it really is. It stands true for all.

Foods that CAUSE Systemic Inflammation include:
Foods high in artificial coloring, preservatives, flavorings, sugars, carbs, and highly processed
foods.

Foods that are Anti-Inflammatory include:
Green Leafy Vegetables
Olive Oil
Nuts
Fruits

Supplements and Herbs that are Anti-Inflammatory include:
Curcumin (main property of Turmeric)
Ginger
Cinnamon
Omega 3 Fatty Acids
Vitamins C, D and Zinc
Bromelain
Spirulina
Green Tea
Garlic
Ashwagandha
Astragalus Root
Calendula
Cats Claw
White Willow Bark
Echinacea
Fenugreek
Cilantro
Chamomile
Holy Basil
Lemon Balm
Licorice Root
Oregano
Parsley
Spearmint

Ideally, it’s best to get your anti-inflammatory nutrients from whole foods, but supplements and
herbs will help — especially if the diet is lacking in nutrients and antioxidants.
By following an anti-inflammatory diet, you can help your horse and yourself heal andprevent chronic diseases.
