The Round Pen Lie

OK, so that’s a pretty brazen title. Got your attention, though, didn’t it?

The Round Pen Lie :: the lie that perpetuates itself over and over again.

Going back over a decade(s?) to when the round pen first made its debut, it’s become the lucky charm for many horsemen. There are articles and books and websites galore all spouting the virtues of round-penning the horse. Driving the horse round and round and round again until the horse stops. Then, the human approaches and attempts to join up/hook up/whatever-up while, at the same time, acting like a complete horse-eating predator.

Don’t know that I’d wanna join up with a man-eating lion.
Don’t think the horse wants to join up with a horse-eating human.
Don’t think I’d feel comfortable ‘joining up’ with someone who has chased me for eternity!

Connecting with horses isn’t about mechanics. It’s not about tools. It’s not about equipment or even tack.

One doesn’t establish a relationship with another by force. One doesn’t nurture the friendship of another by restraint. One certainly doesn’t stand still when assaulted by a stranger unless the assaulted is of the personality who will ‘freeze’ in threatening situations.

Think on that today and feel what’s in your heart.

Better yet, really look into your equine mirror and see what he/she says about what’s in your heart.

You might be surprised.
