Some thoughts to ponder …

The following are some quotes from “Connecting with Horses” by Margrit Coates. Good thinking material –

“Intention is different from attention, but both are interlinked. The horse is attentive to our intention; therefore, it is vital to be aware of the powerful energy movement this trigger. Horses also have intention of their own and when in herds can comply with them.”

“State of mind affects the quality of intention, which is why there are varying effects. Intention is an application that can be learned, rather than being a special or exclusive gift.”

!! “The signals we send out may not be what we think they are and this is why it is important to focus on thoughts so that we harness them rather than let them run riot and take control. Horses are very sensitive to cues from us, which can be so subtle that another human would not notice them, and our unspoken intentions will influence a horse’s behavior and mood.” !!

Those of you who have studied with me know that one of the first things I teach is about ‘intent’. Intent and expectations. While I emphasize ‘Leadership’ and while leadership is the cornerstone to forming a full Partnership, the INTENT is what forms the heart of the relationship.

Heart to Heart Horsemanship encompasses the recognition and discipline of INTENTional  thinking.  Of yes, as Margrit Coates so aptly puts it – harnessing the thoughts in your heart and mind.

PENZANCE’s motto, “It’s all about what’s in your heart and how you use it.” speaks of INTENT clearly.  It’s not something that is normally perceived and embraced during our regular working days. Many are not even aware of what’s really in their hearts until they come face-to-face with their horses and even then, are oblivious to the conversations they are having with their horses. The horse is able to see through us as if we were totally transparent.

Perhaps this very singular ability is the sole reason that we are drawn so intently to horses — so we can learn from them. As we learn to harness our thoughts our very lives change.

It’s kind of like a universal thing.
